Rob has had a keen interest in fusion materials since his year in industry at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. After which he completed an MSci in Chemical Physics from the University of Bristol with his master’s project on characterising the mechanical properties and radiation damage resistance of surface treated austenitic steels. He joined the group in 2019 and has been looking at tungsten armour material which has been retrieved from the JET fusion device. His research focuses on characterising changes in mechanical properties and small scale features that can be attributed to plasma exposure and how that affects component lifetimes in future devices such as ITER.
